Jeff -- THANK YOU for organizing the video conference with Laird Hunt! What a great discussion with him. I also love Paul Auster and Murakami, and found myself thinking of Auster in particular when I read this book. I recommend both those authors, and I know other people think Calvino is awesome... I haven't read him. Thank you also for hosting a great discussion group where even we non-literary types feel comfortable asking questions.
I didn't want to bang on the "shoe" discussion further last night, but I was wondering what people thought about the parallel stories of Ireneo running around the city with his problematic shoes, and Harry running from his problems. When Ireneo threw his shoes over the cliff (instead of himself) wasn't this also a hopeful foreshadowing of the end when Harry (we think) moves forward from his tragedy?
Maybe this is obvious to the English majors in the crowd... _________________ -Ulrike |

Ulrike, you're most welcome. Happy that you could attend and enjoyed it.
I like the parallel analogy you've come up with here. It works for me. I think both Harry and Ireneo do stop their respective running from their problems by the end of the story. Hunt did seem to lean in the direction of a happier resolution rather than an ominous ending, but I think he also implied that these problems/bad memories are not just going to complete disappear, either.
And I'm not really an English major, but I play one on TV |
